In May 1948, just before the establishment of the State of Israel, Kfar Etzion fell to Jordanian forces, and 157 defenders were killed, an event remembered as the "Kfar Etzion massacre.” After the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel regained control of the West Bank, including Gush Etzion. In 1967, the children of the original settlers returned to re-establish Kfar Etzion.
